Today at Diva Central we have been having fun styling the gorgeous Mandrake (aka our mannequin) to play around with some transitional pieces. Now that summer is nearly over in Australia and Autumn is on its way, we want to get the most wear out of our beautiful summer garments while we can.

Digging through our accessories cupboard, I came across our stash of Obi Belts.

Belts in hand, along with other various pieces to play with, Mandrake and I set upon creating some gorgeous new looks.

Our first, and maybe our favourite style, was teaming a Collette Dress in Lipstick Red, with an Essential Stretch Camisole in White, and the Obi Belt in Black & White. We found it to give the colour of the Collette a whole new life, and the layering of the camisole lends to a cooler climate, while working beautifully with the belt.

Another style which would be great for casual dining or a barbecue with friends was the Oasis Cropped Pants in Black, the Lucie Ruffle Top, and again the Obi Belt in Black & White. This also gave the Lucie Top a new look, and would be gorgeous when paired with a cute pair of ballet flats.

Our last and somewhat surprising find, was the Emerald City Eyelet Dress with the Obi Belt in Black & Emerald. The belt lifted a plain summer dress into something extra, and could be worn with a black shrug when the weather gets cooler.

Our Garment of the Week features will, for the time being, take on a different form.

As we in Australia are approaching the end of summer, while our friends at Igigi and Kiyonna are near the end of their winter, our minds are turning to the fabulous Autumn/Winter stock that we have been seeing on the designers’ websites, but just haven’t quite been right for our current climate.

Each week, we will be featuring one of the new releases from their Autum/Winter collections, and making them available on our website. We have been holding this stock in our warehouse until we believed the right time was upon us to share these gorgeous garments with you all.

This week, we are releasing the beautiful Hiroko Dress.

This surplice bodice dress with set-in waistband is a brilliant display of the ladylike style with its figure-hugging design that graduates to an A-line skirt, which hits below the knees. The Hiroko comes in blue and maroon, features set-in ¾ bell shaped sleeves, and includes a reversible belt, which has a contrast print and self colours.

Diva Diamond Points are earned as follows:

$1.00 spent at Style & Substance = 1 x Diva Diamond Point

Style & Substance are in the process of implementing some new and exciting initiatives in 2012, with the first being a more formal Lay-By system. Our Diva's will now be able to choose a Lay-By option at checkout, and will be provided a confirmation email which includes the deposit required and payment plan.

STYLE & SUBSTANCE LAY-BY TERMS & CONDITIONS

A 12 week lay-by is now available on all orders over $100. Payments are to be made regularly, with a minimum 20% deposit of the total order amount required within 24 hours.

Place your order online by logging in and choosing your garment/s. The lay-by option can be selected on orders over $100.00 during the checkout process and you will receive confirmation of your order immediately.

You will be emailed a lay-by confirmation within 24 hours of the order being received. This will outline the deposit required, as well as a payment plan and lay-by payment details.

If the 20% deposit is not received by Style & Substance after 48 hours of the lay-by confirmation order being sent, the order will be cancelled and you will be notified via email.

Payments are to be made via direct bank transfer and you must email info@styleandsubstance.com.au with your details and amount paid.

And a happy new year to you all! We hope the festive season was kind to you.

We here at Diva Central were planning on a quiet Christmas/New Year around the office - a few days off, a chance to catch up on some jobs that have been pushed down the To-Do list over the last month or so. That was until Style & Substance were one of three plus-size fashion retailers featured on an Australian news program, A Current Affair. She aptly proved her worth as one of the most impressive female vocalists on the current music scene when she was only 16 and fast forward five years and those amazing vocals have only got better.

The year 2011 has been a massive year for this impressive female vocalist. Her portrayal of Cynthia in the hit musical The Sapphires, presented by Company B Belvoir and Black Swan State Theatre Company, received rave reviews in Australia, London and Korea and her performance as Mama Cass in the Melbourne production of new Australian musical Flowerchildren was critically acclaimed. Casey went on to headline her own Mama Cass shows in Sydney and Canberra and, in addition to headlining Vibe Alive tours across Australia, also supported the legendary Cyndi Lauper on her Australian National Tour.

When not wowing audiences with her powerhouse vocals, Casey also hosted the 2011 Deadly Awards alongside Aaron Pederson and is currently flexing her acting muscles in Company B Belvoir’s production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It. 2012 is gearing up to be yet another busy year, with the return of Casey's acclaimed Big, Beautiful & Sexy show. Body Shape Solutions - Rectangle

In a world that proclaims sensuous curves as the epitome of femininity, women who have the rectangle shape can sometimes feel frumpy and mannish with their lack of obvious curves. The rectangle shaped woman will generally have broad shoulders, with a full bust and short, thick waist, balanced against big hips and thighs ending with well defined lower legs (you have calves that are begging to be showcased in a pair of chunky heels!). When a Rectangle gains weight, is mainly distributed through the abdomen, buttocks, chest, and face. This overall fat distribution creates the typical rectangle (straight) shape. The overall masculine appearance, particularly from the rear, of this shape is common for this figure type and so working to emphasize the many positive attributes with careful stylizing is important.

Blouses and Tops

Camisoles and wide V necklines are perfect for reducing the breadth of your shoulders and creating a feminine décolletage. Look for shaped or fitted Tees with neckline embellishments (such as sequins, piping or ribbon trim) that have plain sleeves. Empire line tops that feature a low neckline and artful draping across the midsection can create the illusion of curves beneath.

Shirts with front gathers and no lapels are a great option, but it is important that your remember that less is more with regards to your neckline and so if you are wearing a suit jacket, then you would be better to pop a simple deep scooped camisole underneath (such as the essential camisole) and team your shirt with a pair of wide legged pants or a flared skirt instead.

Jeans and Pants

Wide legged trousers that drape and flow are your best look. Avoid pants that have side pockets, opting instead for diagonally placed front pockets (preferably decorative, or stitch them closed). Jeans are not the greatest wardrobe staple as the stiff denim fabric and cut of a jean leg will draw attention to your straight up and down shape. Instead, choose to wear beautiful palazzo pants that float over your hips and look fabulous, especially when paired with a fitted tank top, statement earrings and some gorgeous flats or sandals.

Skirts

Skirts that flare from the hip are perfect for you; they give the illusion of shape and feminine curves. Inverted pleating, godets, and asymmetric paneled skirts that finish at the knee all work to create a feminine silhouette whilst showcasing your gorgeous shaped calves and ankles.

Jackets and Coats

Generally speaking, jackets are not a great item for a rectangle to keep in their wardrobe. The overall “boxi-ness” does little de-emphasise your symmetrical build. However hip length jackets with single button closure and a long lapel (or no lapel) or a jacket that fastens with a front tie-belt or sash will create the “nipped in” illusion of a waist and break up the square of your torso.

Empire line coats that nip in at the narrowest part of your waist (just under the bust) are perfect, or a single breasted A-line coat with a deep lapel will work just as well. Remember to wear it fastened to keep that “nipped in waist” illusion.

Dresses are where the rectangle-shaped woman comes into her own. Halter necks, tummy ruching, faux wrap dresses and deep neckline ruffles are fabulous looks for a rectangle by drawing attention to the most defined area of your body – your bust. Maxi dresses with a wide halter, nipped in waist and flared skirt (like the Scarlett Halter Maxi), teamed with fabulous earrings and a pair of chunky wedges will create that “wow” factor for summer parties or BBQ’s.

For every day dressing, try a pretty halter sundress (teamed with a light weight shrug for those who do not want to show off their arms) and a cute pair of sandals as a change to pants and tees. Gala dresses with a deep, wide V-neck and side ruching will draw attention away from your shoulders and highlight your bosom, while the ruching will skim across your tummy and creative a narrower waistline.

Body Shape Solutions - Apple

The apple is a delicious fruit with magnificent, sensual curves – it is after all the original “forbidden fruit”, however not all women with this figure type feel as wonderful. An apple shaped woman will tend to have broader shoulders compared to their narrower hips and flat bottom. She will tend to have fuller breasts and a softer, fuller middle. When Apples gain weight, is mainly distributed through the abdomen, chest, and face. A protruding tummy is also common among this figure type and can be a source of much frustration and low self esteem for many.

Blouses and Tops

A top that fits snugly through the bust and highlights your narrowest point, which is just under the bust, then flares gently over your tummy but not too wide. Small sleeves or flutter sleeves that cover your upper arms are a great look.

Being an apple does not mean you give T-shirts a wide birth, but careful gathering or ruching is the key. Carefully placed gathers confuse what is artful draping or a gorgeous part of the wearer. Make sure that the tee is long enough to cover your tummy (but not so long it could be a dress). A wide V or rounded V-neck will break up your décolletage.

Shirts are entirely feasible as long as the cut follows an empire line where the shirt fits through your bust and then side fastens or has a “corset feature” to offer a wonderful shape and a little extra support at the same time. Long sleeves with European (fold back) cuffs are a perfect balance to the ensemble and slim your arms. Remember not to button your shirts all the way to the top; shirts with open fronts, that hint at the décolletage are much more flattering.

Skirts that side fasten and are flat fronted are perfect for you, inverted pleats, or godets that start at a point below your tummy are perfect as they will showcase your legs, and flare with feminine folds to knee length will balance your torso.

Jeans and Pants

Your flat bottom and shapely legs will be set off to perfection in a pair of flat fronted (where possible) pants with a deep waistband. However, as fewer and fewer manufacturers create side-fastening pants, front fly pants with a wide, flat waistband to support (not hold in) your tummy will do the trick and not add extra bulk. Boot cut or wide leg trousers are perfect for your shape, as they will balance against your top half beautifully. Jeans do not have to be your enemy, however conventional low riders are not your friend. A tailored, wide legged trouser-style jean is your best bet and can be teamed with a causal top to look just as, if not more, fabulous.

Flaunt Cocktail Dress

Jackets and Coats

Jackets with a little tailoring and open V-neck are your best option. Single button closure narrow your torso, and a tie front can work well if the knot and ends sit just above your tummy area.

Coats that are worn open and in a contrasting colour or fabric will create a slender illusion and not a solid block – steer away from black, and experiment with gorgeous textures or prints to really let your personality shine.

Dresses

Dresses are infinitely “do-able”. Princess seaming, with a gentle flare will create the illusion of curves and there is no “set in” waist to cut you in half. Gala dresses that have bodice ruching and gentle skirt flares that are flat fronted and made from gorgeous floaty fabrics (such as chiffon) will set you apart from the crowd and create a look that will have you be the jaw-dropping, goddess you know is within you.

A Day at the Races

Roma, Queensland …. home of bottle tree, the Big Rig, football legends, cowboys and a race that stops the country (well country Queensland at least)…The XXXX Roma Cup.

I came to Roma as a teacher four years ago, making the 480km move from Brisbane. I have always loved the country, and was so excited to be making a new beginning in this town. Roma isn’t that small, with a population of around 8,000 residents, but it is experiencing a boom with the Coal Seam Gas industry in the area. I love Roma for its people, sense of community and country fun! Ohhhh and cowboys!!

So the Roma Cup is one of the biggest races in the country calendar with over 8000 people attending the race meeting that is such a big day that turns into an even bigger night. It is always a great day to catch up with friends who come back to town for the event, and is one of the last events in town for us teachers to get together as we generally all head our own ways a week or so later for the holidays. It is a fun day, but……. It is always stinking hot!!! I was caught out my first year here in Roma, wearing stockings in the 40+ degree heat (the stockings didn’t last long), and so have been weary of what to wear.

There have been some beautiful summer dresses on the Style & Substance website of late, but I had Jacqueline in my sights. I wanted to colour block my outfit this year, and what better way to do it than with the beautiful blue Jacqueline. It is light, but has enough structure to fall nicely over lumps and bumps. It is unusual in its details on the front, and it has that vintage summer dress look with waist tie, buttons and collar I was hoping for. As soon as I tried it on, I knew it was THE dress. I accessorized the dress with a tan (everything looks better on with a tan), some hot green pointy shoes, and a gorgeous big vibrant pink fascinator I had purchased on a girls week away in Melbourne.

I had so many compliments on my dress and outfit. The dress lasted from day to (late) night, and still looked as good as when I first got to the races earlier that day. It is such an easy dress to wear, falls beautifully and is a stunning colour. I can’t wait to wear it to a casual BBQ in the summer with a cute pair of flats.

Hello beauties, I realise that (for most of use) we only connect here on Facebook and may well go our whole lives without meeting. As the owner of Style and Substance, I strive every day to present to you a positive spin on life and to embrace and love the organically beautiful woman you are.

Today I have been accused of pretending to have a mental illness, and of all the accusations that can and ...have been made about me; I have never been cut so deep as now. So, today and yes, even after a cute post I recently made about selecting outfits for a weekend I have been reminded more than ever that you should not judge a book by it’s cover. I suffer clinical depression, and some days to get out of bed is more than I can possibly bear – what drives me, is that perhaps today might be the day, that someone buys a dress from me that changes their life and helps them to realise just how wonderful and unique they are.

That is all I can manage right now, just remember to love yourself first – you are the most important person and should be the most cherished person in your world. Kxx

This sums up South Hedland the place where I live, it's harsh climate and hot, hot summers, it's scorching red soil and balmy nights, a place with wide open spaces and amazing natural landscapes. South Hedland is part of the Pilbara and more affectionately referred to as "the engine room" of Australia. We have a massive mining industry here, predominately salt and iron ore.

But a short six-hour drive north of South Hedland is beautiful Broome and its amazing sunsets and sandy white beaches .... or a seven hour drive south to the Ningaloo reef and the gorgeous Coral Bay.

So living in a town that is so hot, dressing during the summer means looking for clothes that are light and airy ..... and this is where Style and Substance is my friend.
